Sportspersons who were found to be using (shall we say abusing?) steroids have been facing some tough times. Not only those million-dollar endorsement contracts but their successful careers are in for a toss.
Anabolic in AAS refers to muscle building and androgenic means related to male characteristics. The class of drugs is named anabolic steroids, which are synthetic compounds which mimic action of male sex hormone, the testosterone.
The important medical use of anabolic steroids is treating delay in puberty, impotence (certain situations), and to treat wasting of body due to HIV and/or associated conditions. Still medical fraternity seldom prescribes the steroids to young or healthy people for the sake of building muscles.
The important reasons teens and youngsters getting attracted to using steroids are:
- To build muscles
- To reduce body fat
- To become powerful performer in sports
Youth takes the steroids orally or have them injected or even have them rubbed in cream form topically. A majority of the youth maybe suffering from what is called muscle dysmorphia wherein a person has wrong/bad image of his/her body. Men assume they look weak and small although they are big and muscular. It can be equated to the feeling of anorexia amongst female folks. The youth starts abusing steroids illegally (without prescription). What they are ignoring is the many health consequences that are associated with the steroid abuse which include (but not limited to):
- Disturbance in the hormonal system
- Facial acne
- Reduced sperm production
- Irreversible shrinking (permanent) of testicles and impotence in some cases
- Irreversible breast enlargement (gynaecomastia)
- Decreased body fat
- Reduction in size of breasts
- Deepening of voice (irreversible)
- Body hair (hair on chest and chin)
- Male pattern of balding
- Genital changes include increase in the size of clitoris
The aforementioned are endocrinal steroids effects and there could be other side effects such as cardiovascular diseases not limited to risk of heart attacks and strokes, liver diseases, cysts and tumors. There will also be behavioral changes which include aggression and rage when high doses of steroids are administered and other common changes include depression and mood swings. Some people show extreme suicidal tendencies.
Research shows that educating about steroids effects cannot convince abusers and help discourage the people from staying off of them. In fact by showing the pains and the gains of steroid use is a more effective way of convincing people about steroids effects.
It’s a myth that you will bulk soon by popping a few pills of steroids and the fact is steroids will make the acne pop up sooner and fell your hair sooner than bulking your muscle. Instead of clogging muscles with mass they clog the hearts and helps tumors grow.
